School Charity Event in Bai Se, China
On March 24th 2011 the Yo Yo Mission visited a school in Baise in China, however, the school that we ended up visiting was, in fact, not the school that we actually helped and fundraised for! Unfortunately there were no access routes for any form of vehicle to get to the intended school. So instead we visited a school that was far more financially able and had already received support in the past. Therefore they were willing to act as a representative school for us to present the donation to, on behalf of the recipient school.
More than 200 people were invited to Baise and with all of them paying £50 each there was enough left, after food and travel, to spend on stationery and sports equipment for the children at the school. Through donations we raised another £3613.64, which was then assigned to address some of the more pressing needs of the school; your donations went directly to sourcing windows, toilets and other general renovations to the school.
The condition of the school was largely a result of the minimal amounts of government funding that the school currently receives. Just the day-to-day running of the school is not covered by this level of funding as it literally only paid for the building work. While in China we discovered that the distance that the school is away from the city is relative to the level of funding it receives, the further the distance the less a school receives. Evidently, in our eyes this is highly inappropriate, as one’s access to a good education should not be determined by their address.
While logistical obstacles had appeared and we were unable to meet face to face with the children we here at the Yo Yo Mission are confident in the knowledge that our project made a difference.
