An Update of our Work In Bungoma, Kenya

Well that was an experience! It turns out that a lot can happen in three weeks in Kenya… building an orphanage and school, giving homes to 63 children, and becoming temporary vegetarians! Many positive steps were taken during our time out in Bungoma, Kenya as we worked with the local community to achieve our ultimate goal of establishing the first Yo Yo Orphanage and School.

When we were confident that the Orphanage was better equipped, we could concentrate on establishing the School. The School represents, for Yo Yo Mission, the instrument of change. It is through diverse methods of teaching that we seek to transform the futures of these orphans and help them to realise their full potential. In order to do so, we have provided them with the necessary tools: desks, blackboards and schoolbooks; we have also employed three teachers and one matron who we are certain will orchestrate the changes needed.

Fundraising for this project is done via a number of outlets that will undoubtedly increase closer to the time of the project’s execution. All Yo Yo workplaces have within them a collection box from which the money goes DIRECTLY to the orphanage, just a small way that you can help and be a part of this mission.

From the outset, it was evident that there were areas that required immediate attention, so we got to work connecting a water point, providing toilets and buying beds, blankets and mattresses for the children. It is important that the orphanage is sustainable so we installed solar lights that will continue to provide them with light without the responsibility of bills. The gratitude we were shown by the children and the local community, for just these basic needs, was unbelievable. As they sang for us to show their appreciation, we realised that the only thing more magical than the children’s smiles was their voices.

Unfortunately, at present, we only have the capacity to cater for 63 children, such a small number when you take into account the increasing number of orphans in Kenya. So our immediate plans involve buying a larger plot of neighbouring land on which to expand the orphanage and to set up a farming project from which we aim to teach the children the importance of self-sufficiency. This initial visit to Bungoma, Kenya has succeeded in creating the foundations of a long-term friendship with the community, but there are already numerous plans for return visits.

Upon arrival we were faced with the reality of the situation; these children were depending on us to make a change in their lives. Walking away from the Orphanage three weeks later, we were assured that we have. But this is only the beginning.
